Teenage sweethearts, two passports, one very long trip.

We're Aishani and Bhavya. We grew up in Mumbai, started travelling together in college on money we really didn't have, got married in a small ceremony, and eventually moved to California. Our Happy Passports is the record of all of it.

How this started

Neither of us planned to become "travel people" on the internet. We took photos because we wanted to remember things. Friends kept asking for the itineraries, so Aishani wrote the first one down, then the next. The blog grew out of a Google Doc that got too long to share.

The rule from the beginning: write the guide we wished we'd had. Real costs, real timings, the hotel we actually stayed in, and the places we'd skip next time. If a post here says a cable car cost 75 francs, it's because we paid it.

Why California

Bhavya built a hardware startup in India (Square Off, a chess board that moves its own pieces, acquired in 2022), and the work eventually brought us to the Bay Area. We live in the East Bay now. California turned out to be the best home base a travel blog could ask for: national parks a day's drive away, a coastline that doesn't end, and a Little India when we're homesick.

So a lot of what we make now is California-heavy. Not because we stopped going further, but because this is where we live, and we document life as it happens.

Vegetarian, everywhere

We're vegetarian, and a lot of our family is Jain, which means "is there anything I can eat here?" is a question we've asked on four continents. Every guide on this site is written from that angle. The food sections are not an afterthought; they're often the reason we went.

What's next

A third passport is on the way. The next chapter of this site is the part of life abroad that nobody writes down properly: setting up a home, doing Diwali 8,000 miles from family, and having a baby in America as Indians. It all goes in Life in America.

Work with us

We partner with tourism boards, hotels, airlines and brands that fit the way we actually travel. If that's you, here's how we work, or write to hello.happypassports@gmail.com.
